There are many definitions of an essential oil, depending on on your views, eg scientific or esoteric or phsiological.  An oil is "essential" in the sense that it carries the essence of the plant.  The essential oil is obtained from plants by various means such as distillation, expression or extraction with volatile solvents.  It is found in different places depending on the plant, eg - ylang ylang is found in the flowers, cinnamon in the bark and bergamot in the peel, lemongrass in the leaves and rosemary in the entire herb. Essential oils volatile oils led to the naming of 'aromatherapy'.  

Essential oils have been used medicinally throughout history. Interest in essential oils has revived in recent decades, with the popularity of aromatherapy, a branch of complementary medicine. It is vital that potential therapists obtain a thorough training with a recognised course to enable safe practice, it is preferable also to be a member of a professional organisation such as the International Federation of Professional Aromatherapists. 

Essential oils are a complex mix of natural chemicals that form a synergy when found naturally.  With knowledge they can be safely blended together to enhance their positive effects.  Individual blends can be created to suit each individual person at any particular time.

Essential oils are diluted in a carrier oil such as sweet almond and used in massage, they can also be diluted in any other pure base (such as a gel, bath milk) for use on the body or in the bath.  They can be used neat as an inhalation, diffused in the air by an oil burner or used to create pot pourri, burned as incense, in a candle.  Essential oils can ingredients in face or body creams, ointments, gels, shampoos, cosmetics, etc. 

Why organic essential oils?  In my opinion, and that of many other professionals, naturally grown plants, trees and fruit, etc grown without the use of excessive fertilisers and pesticides, ensure that you obtain the optimum benefits of the effects from the oils, just as nature indended.
