In ancient times comfrey was called 'knitbone',' all heal' or 'woundwort' and has been used topically for many years for healing cuts, bruises, fractures, sprains, injured tendons/ligaments, sores and skin ulcers.

 From Daily Mail 26 Jan 2010: " A cream made from the herb comfrey could be as good as over-the-counter painkillers for treating sprained ankles, says a new study.  In one Italian trial, comfrey ointment was as effective as the anti-inflammatory gel diclofenac on pain, swelling, movement and tenderness.  Results from further U.S. studies have led researchers to believe ointments based on the herb might also work for back pain and other painful joint problems, such as osteoarthritis."
